Ferrari F2012

Here it is – the new Ferrari single-seater, F2012.  While the full list of tech specs can be found here, what sticks out the most on the F2012 is the stepped nose design.

The racer was officially unveiled yesterday at a snowed-in Ferrari headquarters in Maranello.  So much snow in fact, that Ferrari’s own CEO, Luca di Montzemolo  - among others – couldn’t be there in person for the unveiling.  Nevertheless, the show went on(line), broadcast over the internet to accommodate those who couldn’t brave the snow.  Check out the launch presentation here.

One word you’ll hear mentioned a few times during the presentation is “aggressive,” in reference to the front end, which is a tactful way of saying “slightly hideous.”  Although I’m not qualified to speak about aerodynamics I’m assuming the stepped design does generate some considerable downforce upon that point, acting like a wing.  While I understand it’s benefit, I’m wondering why the designers couldn’t make the nose more like a popcorn scoop, incorporating small side walls along the nose profile to disguise the ‘step’ entirely?  Check out the rest of the pics and take part in the poll below.
