Hyundai claims that their Genesis R-Spec sedan is faster than a Porsche Panamera S from 0 to 60.
Ok, so that’s not saying much. However, it does say a lot about our present “golden era of automobiling” when Hyundai and Porsche can be mentioned in the same sentence, let alone compared.
Hyundai Canada has been running this commercial where it claims that its Genesis R-Spec sedan is faster than the upmarket four-door coupe, Porsche Panamera, in “S” trim. How much faster? That’s still to be determined.
According to the fine print at the bottom of the video, the 429hp, 5.0 litre V8 Genesis will hit 60mph in 5.3 seconds, which is faster than the time posted by a standard, 400hp Panamera S (Hyundai) tested. A quick glance over at Porsche’s official website and you’ll see a claimed time of 5.2 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster.
Regardless of who’s facts are legit, Hyundai has successfully made its point: the new Genesis R-Spec sedan is as fast – if not faster – as a car costing nearly twice as much. The R-spec sedan here in Canada starts at $53,499, where the Panamera S comes in at $104k.
“Starting at”, is a bit misleading for the Hyundai as there really aren’t any options you could add to it other than a pair of winter mats or mud guards or workmans gloves. It comes standard with such niceties as metallic paint, 19″ wheels, leather interior, power seats, a 17 speaker sound system and front and rear parking sensors with a rear-facing camera. To get a standard Panamera S with those options it’ll cost you another $15k over the list price.
Taking a page from the book on American muscle cars, it’s a bang-for-buck bargain. As for the 0-60 time, I’ll believe it when I see it.
